LAS VEGAS — Floyd Mayweather Jr. used his speed and accuracy to win a unanimous decision Saturday night over a game Miguel Cotto in one of his toughest fights ever.

Mayweather dominated late, rocking Cotto in the 12th round to pull out a win and remain unbeaten in 43 fights. But it wasn’t easy, with Mayweather getting his nose bloodied and Cotto fighting until the final bell.

Mayweather won Cotto’s 154-pound title in the fight, which two judges scored 117-111 and the third 118-110.

The decision was roundly booed by the crowd at the MGM Grand arena, which cheered wildly every time Cotto landed a punch.

SAN ANTONIO — Gregg Popovich is the NBA’s Coach of the Year after leading the San Antonio Spurs to 50 wins in the lockout-shortened season and the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.

The announcement came Tuesday. Popovich also won the award in 2003 when San Antonio won its second of four championships, and he might be headed for a fifth ring if the Spurs keep this up.

After a 12-9 start, the Spurs lost only seven more games the rest of the season.

Popovich received 77 first-place votes. Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau was second (27), Indiana coach Frank Vogel was third (7) and Memphis coach Lionel Hollins was fourth (6). Boston’s Doc Rivers and Denver’s George Karl each received a vote.

IRVING, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys moved up in the NFL draft and selected the best cornerback available in Morris Claiborne with the sixth overall pick Thursday night. 

The Cowboys traded the 14th pick and the 45th overall (second round) picks to the St. Louis Rams for the sixth pick. 

It was the 59th draft day trade since 1989, the first year that Jerry Jones became owner/general manager of the Cowboys. 

Claiborne, 5-11, 188 pounds, was a two-year starter out of LSU who many scouts describe as a smooth athlete with good footwork and balance.
